Walkie-Talkies Explode in Lebanon

As Part of a Second Wave of Attacks, Walkie-Talkies Explode in Lebanon.

According to Beirut, 300 people were hurt and 9 people died in the recent blasts.

On Wednesday, walkie-talkies went off all throughout Lebanon. Only one day had passed since Tuesday, when hundreds of beepers detonated as part of a concerted operation that was allegedly planned by Israel.

Just after 5 p.m. local time, pictures and videos of the explosions started to spread on social media. In one widely circulated video, a large gathering of individuals looked to be the scene of an explosion. Later, Reuters reported that portable radios had gone off all throughout the nation. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, 450 people were hurt and 14 people died as a result of the recent wave of explosives.

The walkie-talkies were part of a package Hezbollah got five months ago, at the same time it acquired the Gold Apollo pagers used in yesterday’s assault. Reuters also claimed that hundreds of explosions had occurred around Lebanon.

Telegram images of the devices seem to show an ICOM IC-V82 walkie-talkie. The location of the walkie-talkies is now unknown, although photos of them clearly display the “made in Japan” logo. The IC-V82 is no longer available from ICOM, and some third-party vendor websites identify the product as “discontinued.” In another footage of the scene, the back of the walkie-talkie completely burst, while the front stayed relatively intact. This sparked speculation that the explosion might have been caused by the battery.

Unconfirmed rumours of further gadgets going off around the nation circulated along with the explosions. On Telegram and other social media, there were rumours that solar panels, routers, and even cellphones had exploded. The National News Agency of Lebanon reported that a small child sustained injuries during one of the several solar panel system explosions happening across the country.

A picture of a broken iPhone that seems to be one of the smartphones that burst has gone viral on social media. However, the image is from a 2021 Egyptian report about an iPhone that supposedly blew up as it was charging, and it has nothing to do with the current attacks.

Although Israel and Lebanon have been at war for fifty years, after October 7 there have been more strikes between the two neighbours. Israel has promised to react after Hezbollah fired missiles into Israel on many occasions. Israel is the only plausible candidate in the walkie-talkie strikes, but they have not claimed credit, just like with the beeper explosives on Tuesday.

Following Wednesday’s blasts, the Israeli army moved part of its forces from Gaza to Lebanon’s northern border.
