Brand SonySXRD panels with contrast enhancerThis Sony projector uses high frame rate SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) panels, which feature an incredibly rapid response rate. This gives it smooth, fluid motion that’s faster and more stable than typical LCD panels, as found in other projectors. Partnering this is Contrast Enhancer. This automatically optimises the contrast level by analysing dark and light sections of the image in every scene.
High contrast and brightnessA further benefit of the SXRD panel versus an LCD one is an improved contrast ratio. By using a superior alignment layer, less light is scattered giving greater levels of black and, hence, a better contrast ratio. So the Sony effortlessly produces inky blacks for exceptional image depth. As with all projectors, it needs a dark room to give its best, but thanks to its high brightness level of 1700 lumen, it still performs well in daytime lighting conditions.
Reality creationBased on technology used in the range-topping VW1000ES model, the Super Resolution upscaler produces fine detail and vivid colour even from lower resolution signals. Ideal when watching off-air broadcasts or when viewing DVDs, with Reality Creation you get closer to 1080p resolution, whatever the source.
Motionflow technologyUnique to Sony is Motionflow technology, which produces smoother-looking motion by creating extra images between the original frames. Showing twice as many pictures per second gives the impression of much more fluid images.
3D via IR or RFGiving you a choice of 3D options, the VPL-HW40ES offers the use IR or RF glasses. Choose IR and, with a built-in transmitter you simply need to add glasses (TDG-PJ1) to get going. Go for the more robust option of RF and you’ll require an external RF transmitter and glasses (AD025-RF-X1 and TDG-BT500A).
Super quiet runningThanks to an advanced cooling system, fan noise is reduced to a whisper quiet 21dB, making the Sony VPL-HW40ES all but inaudible in most environments.
