A Downgraded Modem is reportedly used by the Google Pixel 9a.

The Google Pixel 9a, the company’s newest low-cost “a” series smartphone, was released on Wednesday. The phone is less expensive than the flagship Pixel 9 models, giving up some of the high-end features in exchange for a lower price. According to a report, Google has acknowledged that the Pixel 9a’s modem is one of the trade-offs. In contrast to the modem found in the other Pixel 9 models, the phone uses an older model.

Google told Android Authority that Samsung’s Exynos 5300 modem is used in the new Pixel 9a. The flagship Pixel 9 lineup, on the other hand, has the more recent Exynos 5400 modem, which enhances battery life and supports higher peak downlink speeds and satellite connectivity thanks to the 3GPP Release 17 standard.

According to the report, the Pixel 9a has different connectivity even though it is powered by the same Tensor G4 SoC as the top-tier models. In addition to claiming that the modem of the Pixel 9a would use IPoP (Integrated Package on Package) rather than the FOPLP (Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging) package of the flagship Pixel 9 models, the same publication first reported this development in October.

Remarkably, the Exynos 5300 is the same modem that the tech behemoth from Mountain View debuted in October 2022 with its Pixel 7 series. It was introduced as a replacement for the Pixel 6’s Shannon A5123 5G modem, which received a lot of flak for having frequent issues like call drops and sluggish 5G speeds.

The Exynos 5300 did have some problems, though. Users at the time complained about network outages and excessive battery usage. Since then, Google has fixed the issues with the most recent Pixel 9 series and the Exynos 5400 chip, which offers satellite connectivity and a maximum download speed of 14.79Gbps. Because of this, Samsung’s modem is now a fierce rival to the Snapdragon X75 5G found in the Galaxy S24 series.
