The Ministry of Works has engaged six Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to defend legal challenges against the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
The SANs, representing Minister David Umahi, include Abiodun Owonikoko, Mahmud Mogaji, Prof. J. Olatoke, Yakubu Ruba, Roy Nweze, and Emmanuel Esene.
Their involvement was confirmed in a Memorandum of Conditional Appearance filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
One prominent lawsuit, initiated by rights lawyer Olukoya Ogungbeje, seeks details on the N15 trillion budget allocated for the 700-kilometer project under the Freedom of Information Act.
Ogungbeje claims the Ministry failed to respond to his request for budget details, which he submitted in April 2024.
His lawsuit demands an explanation of the budget, compensation for non-disclosure, and a N20 million fine for Umahi’s alleged refusal to provide the requested information.
Justice Akintayo Aluko granted Ogungbeje leave to pursue a judicial review and seek an order of mandamus, which would compel the Ministry to release the information.
