Apple released the iOS 18.4 Beta 1 update for the iPhone on Friday, introducing new features that are fuelled by the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) suite, Apple Intelligence. Priority Notifications, a feature that Apple had teased at WWDC 2024 in June when announcing iOS 18, is now available in the upgrade. It examines notifications to identify those it deems significant, as the name implies, and shows them in a distinct area on the iPhone’s lock screen.
What’s New in the iOS 18.4 Beta 1 Update
According to Apple, the iPhone’s Priority alerts assess the alerts’ contents using on-device AI processing. The business underlines that this approach preserves their privacy while assisting in determining their significance. Users can swipe up to view all alerts, but only prioritised ones are shown when it is in action.
The iOS 18.4 Beta 1 release also includes a new Ambient Music option in the Control Centre. Sleep, Chill, Productivity, and Wellbeing are the four categories from which it plays a random selection of sounds. It is claimed to have limited functionality because users cannot select which tracks are played, but they can still see and skip the tracks that are playing using the Dynamic Island’s built-in music player.
In addition to the Animation and Illustration styles already available in the Image Playground app, the company claims to have included a new style called Sketch. The feature, which allowed users to select from three distinct styles, was first offered in Image Wand but is now also available in Image Playground.
The update adds additional languages and locations to support Apple Intelligence, as anticipated. English (India, Singapore), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, and Chinese (Simplified) are now supported.
The emoji keyboard now has new Genmoji text, Apple Maps now allows you to select your preferred language, the home screen now has new Library and Shows widgets, and you can choose which translation app to use by default.
