According to a source, the iPhone SE 4 will have slower upload and download speeds than the flagship iPhone 16 versions. With a few firsts, such as Apple’s own 5G modem, the phone is expected to ship on February 19 as the replacement for the iPhone SE (2022). The phone may include a TSMC-developed modem that isn’t compatible with mmWave 5G, which could lead to slower network speeds and possibly make it less capable than its rivals, such the Qualcomm X75 modem.
The iPhone SE 4’s 5G modem from Apple
Apple has been attempting to internalise the creation of chip components, even though it has relied on those from other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Qualcomm and Intel. There have been long-standing rumours that it will launch its in-house 5G modem, which has been in development for a few years. According to reports, the Cupertino-based tech corporation had originally planned to deploy the in-house modem with the iPhone 14 and later the iPhone 15 series, but it encountered difficulties that caused the debut to be delayed.
The iPhone SE 4 might alter that, though. A South Korean publication claims that although the alleged phone would not support mmWave 5G, it will include Apple’s proprietary 5G modem. When compared to the competition, it is therefore thought to have “slow data transfer rates.”
According to earlier assertions made by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to gradually phase out the modems that are now being outsourced. The business is getting ready to switch to using its own technology, beginning with the iPhone SE 4. In the meantime, the rumoured iPhone 17 Air/Slim might be the second smartphone to feature a crucial internal component made by Apple. Both variants are expected to be on sale this year; the Air model is expected to go on sale in Q3 2025.
However, given its inferiority, it is still unclear whether the iPhone 17 series, which is also anticipated to come this year, would continue to use Qualcomm’s cellular technology or switch to Apple’s proprietary chipset.
