Nigerian music icon Davido has highlighted American artists Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj’s deep appreciation for African music and culture.
In an interview with Hot 107.9 FM in Atlanta, Davido shared how both artists actively embrace Afrobeats in their collaborations, marking a shift in global music trends.
Davido revealed that his track “If It’s Okay” with Nicki Minaj was significantly shaped by Afrobeats at her request. He said, “My recent collaboration with Nicki Minaj has a lot of Afrobeats influence because she wanted full African flavor on it. These days, foreign artists want to do our musical styles, so it is easier for me to work with them.”
Similarly, Davido recalled his experience working with Chris Brown on “Sensational,” a track that also showcased Afrobeats. He explained, “When we were recording ‘Sensational,’ I was trying to make it American, but Chris insisted I include Afrobeats. He even asked me to sing in Pidgin.”
Chris Brown’s love for African culture extended beyond the music. Davido shared that his dancers, featured as video vixens in the “Sensational” video, later joined Chris on tour. “Chris Brown loves African culture, and Nicki does too,” he added.
These collaborations underscore the growing influence of African music on the global stage, with Davido playing a pivotal role in bridging cultures and redefining the sound of international music.
