Former Chelsea and England legend Frank Lampard has been named the new head coach of Coventry City, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Championship side.
The 46-year-old takes over with Coventry languishing in 17th place in the league, just two points above the relegation zone. Lampard succeeds Mark Robins, who was dismissed earlier this month after a seven-year tenure with the Sky Blues. This is the first managerial appointment under Coventry owner Doug King, who assumed control in January 2023.
This marks Lampard’s fifth managerial role, following stints at Derby County, Everton, and two separate spells at Chelsea, including an interim position that ended in May 2023. Since leaving Stamford Bridge, Lampard has primarily worked in media and punditry.
Lampard’s appointment comes with high expectations to stabilize and reinvigorate Coventry’s campaign. His first match in charge is set for Saturday against Cardiff City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
