A 35-year-old security guard, Akpooh Edet, from Rubber Estate in Ovia South West, Edo State, kidnapped himself and demanded a ransom of N50 million. Amotekun operatives arrested him in Igbotako, Ondo State, after the DSS requested assistance.
Edet, along with 22 suspects, appeared at the Ondo Amotekun Corps headquarters. Commander Akogun Adetunji Adeleye said Edet hid at Libon James’ residence, adding that Libon may not have known about the kidnapping.
The DSS will handle further investigation of the suspects.
Edet worked for the company for almost ten years, according to Senior Security Manager Oluwole Adesonlu. Adesonlu stated that Edet’s group first demanded N50 million, then lowered it to N35 million before settling on N15 million.
“We discovered one of my guards was missing,” Adesonlu said. “We contacted the DSS and started the search.”
“I reached out to Amotekun in Igbotako, and they found Edet hiding there. We learned he staged the kidnapping to extort money from the company. Two accomplices got arrested in Edo State.”
