The Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) has urged Nigerians to abandon Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in farming, citing serious health risks and increased poverty. The foundation urged the government to ban GMOs nationwide to support sustainable farming.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Joyce Brown, HOMEF’s Director of Programmes, highlighted the dangers of GMOs. “Natural farming without chemicals is the safest approach and should be adopted nationwide,” she said.
Supporting these concerns, rural farmer Ejim Lovelin Nnena stated that GMOs escalate food production costs, deepening poverty among farmers. She advocated for the preservation of traditional seed systems, which she described as vital to farmers’ livelihoods.
Dr. Segun Adebayo, Deputy Director of Food Safety and Agricultural Research at the Ministry of Agriculture, reinforced the warnings against GMOs, referencing their rejection in developed countries like Austria. He noted the increasing awareness in Nigeria’s National Assembly about the potential dangers of GMOs and expressed hope for stricter regulations to protect citizens.
The foundation’s call underscores the need for policies prioritizing natural, sustainable farming methods, which they argue are healthier, more affordable, and more aligned with local agricultural realities.
