The President of the National Association of Nigeria Traditional Medicine Practitioners (NANTMP), Alhaji Shaaba Mekudi, has called on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the bill to establish the Traditional, Complementary, and Alternative Medicine Council of Nigeria (TCACN). He emphasized that such a regulatory body would standardize traditional medicine practices, align them with global expectations, and unlock the sector’s untapped potential.
Speaking at a workshop organized by the South-West branch of NANTMP in collaboration with the United Nations Federation of International Astro, Mekudi highlighted the importance of regulatory frameworks for the growth and credibility of traditional medicine.
Key Highlights:
- Global Examples: Mekudi noted that countries like Ghana and China have established traditional medicine councils that have propelled their industries to international recognition.
- WHO Statistics: He cited the World Health Organization’s (WHO) assertion that 85% of the global population depends on traditional medicine, underlining its significance.
- Local Resources: Nigeria possesses abundant resources—raw materials, skilled practitioners, and a rich herbal tradition—but lacks the necessary support to package and market its medicines domestically and internationally.
Advocacy for TCACN:
- The establishment of TCACN would regulate practitioners, ensuring professionalism and quality control.
- It would position Nigeria to compete in the global herbal medicine market and drive economic benefits.
- Mekudi urged the Federal Government and lawmakers to prioritize this bill, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
The call aligns with efforts to modernize and integrate traditional medicine into Nigeria’s healthcare framework, fostering innovation and boosting public trust.
