The stage is set for Ondo State’s November 16 governorship election, a highly anticipated contest between Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Both candidates hail from the Ilaje area in Ondo South, where they previously served together under the leadership of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu before political differences led them to diverge paths.
Aiyedatiwa, the incumbent governor, is campaigning on the achievements of his administration and the APC’s record in the state, which many believe gives him a slight advantage. His incumbency provides him access to resources and influence that can be pivotal in mobilizing support. Additionally, the APC in Ondo appears unified, presenting a strong front to retain power in the Alagbaka Government House.
However, Ajayi, a seasoned politician with deep grassroots connections, remains a formidable challenger. Despite internal challenges within the PDP, Ajayi’s appeal among some voters and his experience in state politics make him a candidate the APC cannot dismiss.
While the APC has a strategic edge, particularly with a united front and the benefits of incumbency, party leaders remain cautious, knowing that Ajayi’s experience and determination could still pose a significant challenge in this tight race.
