The Nigerian national grid has collapsed once again, making this the 11th incident in 2024. The latest disruption, which took place on Tuesday, saw electricity generation drop to zero, leaving millions without power and bringing the total number of collapses this year to an unprecedented level.
Reports indicate that as of 11 a.m. on Thursday, the nation’s 22 power plants collectively produced only 2,323 megawatts, a significant drop from the day’s peak of 3,743MW.
The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) confirmed the grid failure, noting that a system outage affected its network around 11:29 a.m. In a statement to customers, IKEDC said, “Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not yet issued an official statement on the cause of the collapse or the estimated time for complete power recovery.
This recurring issue underscores ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure, which struggles to meet the growing demands for reliable electricity.
