President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, who died on Tuesday night in Lagos after a brief illness. Lt. Gen. Lagbaja was 56 years old.
This information was disclosed by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, appointed as Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, had a distinguished military career marked by dedication and leadership.
Born on February 28, 1968, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja began his journey in the military at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987, graduating in 1992 as part of the 39th Regular Course and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps.
Over three decades, he held numerous critical roles, including as platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and 72 Special Forces Battalion, and led key operations like Operation ZAKI in Benue, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Operation Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.
Lt. Gen. Lagbaja was a committed scholar, having earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, underscoring his dedication to military strategy and leadership.
Survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s legacy remains in his service to Nigeria. President Tinubu extended condolences to his family and the Armed Forces, honoring the general’s contributions and wishing him eternal peace.
