Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has voiced strong opposition to the detention of minors involved in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, calling it “inhumane and unjust.”
She expressed concern over the treatment of these minors and has called upon Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun to review the detention order issued by Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, who granted N10 million bail to 72 defendants, including undernourished minors, involved in the protests. The bail terms require each defendant to secure two sureties for the same amount.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan highlighted that holding minors in a medium correctional facility like Kuje Prison is inappropriate and infringes on their fundamental rights. She asserted that minors should face trial in juvenile court with their identities protected from public exposure.
Appealing to the Federal Government, Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized the need to “temper justice with mercy” and release these children, as adults likely manipulated them into participating in the protests. She concluded by emphasizing the importance of education for minors, stating, “Children should be in school, not detention.”
