Ruben Amorim’s appointment as Manchester United manager sets a record as he becomes the club’s youngest manager of the 21st century, and the youngest since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
At 39 years and 289 days old, Amorim steps into the role after a swift rise through the coaching ranks, starting his managerial career in 2018 and making a name for himself at Braga before joining Sporting CP in March 2020.
His success at Sporting, where he secured two Primeira Liga titles, has established him as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.
Amorim is now the youngest United manager since Wilf McGuinness, who took the job in 1969 at 31, and is also the first under-40 manager since Ferguson.
This represents a shift for United, who have generally opted for more seasoned managers in recent years. Following Ferguson’s retirement, the youngest permanent manager was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, appointed at 45. Interim managers Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick were both 40 when they briefly held the position.
