Sir Alex Ferguson leaves Manchester United by mutual consent

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will leave his ambassadorial role at the club at the end of the current season (2024/25).

According to The Telegraph, the decision comes as part of the club’s efforts to cut costs and balance its financial records.

INEOS, the company co-owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has decided to end its financial commitment to Ferguson, who is recognized as the most successful manager in Manchester United’s history.

Ferguson has served as a director on the club’s football board, primarily in a ceremonial role, akin to those held by club legends like Sir Bobby Charlton, who passed away in 2023, and former chief executive David Gill.

The official board includes the Glazer siblings, INEOS co-owner John Reece, and INEOS Sport’s chairman Rob Nevin, alongside independent directors Robert Leitao and John Hooks.

The decision regarding his departure was amicable and followed a direct conversation between Ferguson and co-owner Ratcliffe, assuring that he will always be welcome at Old Trafford.

Throughout his illustrious managerial career at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson won a remarkable number of trophies, including:

  • 13 Premier League titles
  • 2 UEFA Champions League titles
  • 5 FA Cups
  • 4 League Cups

In total, he secured 38 major trophies for the club, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest managers in football history.
