VC advises FG to cut education taxes

The Vice Chancellor of Achievers University, Owo, Professor Omolola Irinoye, has called on the federal government to alleviate the tax burdens on educational institutions to foster sustainable growth in the sector.

Prof. Irinoye expressed concerns over the exclusion of private university students from accessing government education loans, despite public institutions’ inability to meet the demand for higher education. She highlighted the institution’s commitment to supporting students, evidenced by the introduction of tuition-free courses to ease the financial burden on families.

Addressing the japa syndrome—the emigration of skilled professionals—Prof. Irinoye warned against lowering education standards to meet demand. She stressed the importance of maintaining quality to ensure Nigerian graduates remain internationally competitive. “Increasing the number of students and graduates to address shortages must be approached cautiously. Poorly trained professionals could damage the country’s reputation and affect international accreditation,” she stated.

She proposed turning the brain drain into a “brain gain” through technology.

Despite the challenges, Prof. Irinoye reaffirmed Achievers University’s commitment to resilience and innovation. “We will continue to explore solutions, engage stakeholders, and advocate for better policies to support education in Nigeria,” she said.

On academic performance, she disclosed that 71 of the 654 graduating students achieved First Class honors, 303 graduated with Second Class Upper Division, 243 earned Second Class Lower Division, and 33 secured Third Class degrees.
