The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the National Working Committee (NWC), led by Umar Damagum, for the repeated postponements of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Speaking during an emergency meeting in Abuja, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara expressed concern over the indefinite delay of the NEC meeting, initially scheduled for August 15 and subsequently postponed multiple times, now slated for February 2025 at the latest, per directives from the PDP Governors Forum. Wabara emphasized that the delays erode trust and undermine party unity.
PDP Crisis and Calls for Reconciliation
Wabara highlighted ongoing internal challenges within the PDP, including growing calls for Damagum’s resignation since his appointment as acting National Chairman after Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s court-ordered removal. The BoT announced plans to meet with former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike in January to advance reconciliation efforts.
He stressed the urgency of holding the NEC meeting, describing it as vital for resolving party issues, maintaining democratic principles, and fostering unity. “Further delays could exacerbate existing challenges and sow unnecessary discord,” Wabara warned, urging the NWC to adhere to the February timeline.
Broader National Concerns
Addressing national issues, Wabara criticized the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, citing skyrocketing living costs, poorly implemented reforms, and increased poverty levels. He called for the PDP to serve as a beacon of hope and good governance for Nigerians, emphasizing the party’s role in providing alternatives to the current administration’s policies.
