Fire rage in Delta, Yobe, Taraba, and Kwara

Yesterday, the fire continued to rage through Kwara, Yobe, Taraba, and Delta, causing widespread damage.

In Kwara State’s capital, Ilorin, a fire destroyed 19 stores and 16 rooms. The blaze broke out around 10:16 a.m. in the Ita-Amodu neighbourhood, spreading from an overloaded lorry to a nearby structure.

In Delta State’s Ika North Local Government Area, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) building caught fire, caused by a power surge. The commission lost several items, including ballot boxes and generators, but no casualties occurred.

A fire also destroyed the Bayan Tasha market in Damaturu, Yobe State, while in Taraba State, a fire damaged the Duchess Lounge in Jalingo, causing losses worth over one billion naira. The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, though power surges and weather may have contributed.

Prof. Joseph Albasu Kunini, the lounge’s owner, expressed gratitude that no lives were lost, but called it a huge loss. The lounge had recently been renovated for its third anniversary.

Desmond Wee, the lounge’s manager, reported the fire immediately but stated that the fire department arrived three hours after the damage occurred.
