A political support group, Nationwide Agenda for Tinubu (NAT), has condemned Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a prominent figure of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), for allegedly misleading Nigerians about President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills before the National Assembly. In a statement, NAT accused Kwankwaso of either misunderstanding the reforms or deliberately politicizing President Tinubu’s initiative.
The group argued that Kwankwaso’s recent remarks, made during a convocation at Skyline University in Kano, reflect his lingering frustration from his underwhelming performance in the 2023 presidential elections. This, according to NAT, has led him to resort to divisive rhetoric, casting unfounded accusations against the administration, instead of contributing to constructive dialogue or national development.
NAT emphasized that President Tinubu’s tax reforms are essential for addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and promoting equitable development across all regions, including northern states. The group’s statement highlighted the President’s plan to correct the imbalanced distribution of Value Added Tax (VAT), which currently allocates 70% of VAT proceeds to Lagos, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), leaving the remaining 34 states with less. This allocation system is based on the location of company headquarters rather than where goods are consumed.
The group asserted that President Tinubu’s reforms aim to ensure a fairer distribution of VAT proceeds to all states, including those in the north, countering Kwankwaso’s claim that the reforms would harm the northern economy. NAT criticized Kwankwaso for misrepresenting the facts to the youth, thereby distorting the true intentions behind the reforms.
