Fresh collapse hits national grid, second in 24 hours

Nigeria’s power grid collapsed again at about 9:17 AM on Tuesday, just a day after the previous failure. This latest incident has left numerous regions across the country without electricity.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) confirmed the collapse in a post on X, stating: “Dear Valued Customer, Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 09:17hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network.

We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid.”

This marks the second grid failure in under 24 hours. Monitoring by the Independent Service Operator (ISO), a part of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), revealed that electricity transmission plummeted to 0.00 megawatts by 7 PM on Monday, indicating that no power was transmitted from generation stations to the 11 distribution companies.

This was a sharp decline from 3,566 megawatts recorded around 6 PM.

The repeated failures highlight ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, raising concerns about reliability and the need for urgent improvements.
