The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward the establishment of a new academic institution, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, following the bill’s passage for first reading on Thursday.
Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other representatives, this bill aims to promote the study of Nigerian languages.
According to Section II, Part I of the bill, once established, the university will encourage the advancement of learning and provide opportunities for all individuals, regardless of race, creed, gender, or political beliefs, to acquire higher education in Nigerian languages and cultures.
The university will develop and offer various academic and professional programs leading to diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate research, and higher degrees.
It will emphasize planning, adaptive, developmental, and productive skills in the field of Nigerian languages and cultures, with the goal of producing socially mature individuals capable of effectively communicating, understanding, and using Nigerian languages for national development.
In addition to its educational mission, the institution will serve as an agent for postgraduate training, research, and innovation, focusing on the effective utilization, exploitation, and conservation of Nigeria’s natural, economic, and human resources.
The university will also establish collaborations with other national institutions involved in the training and research of Nigerian languages and cultures.
Furthermore, the institution will provide sound foundational training to support the development of Nigerian languages and emphasize teaching and research activities.
This includes outreach programs, in-service training, continuing education, and adaptive research.
The university’s mandate, outlined in Section 1(2) of the bill, specifically includes the responsibility to teach and train high-caliber professionals in Nigerian languages.
