Cameroon to Release Lagdo Dam

Cameroon to Release Lagdo Dam Water, 11 Nigerian States Warned of Flooding

The federal government of Nigeria has warned citizens in 11 states about the future discharge of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

Umar Muhammed, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency director general and CEO, issued the advisory.

The announcement said Lagdo Dam officials would start regulated water releases on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

The discharge rate will start at 100 m³/s, or 8,640,000 m³/day.

11 states get urgent flood warning from FG

Within seven days, the rate is predicted to increase to 1000 m³/s, based on the inflow from the upstream Garoua River, a major tributary of the Benue River and reservoir source.

“The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency wishes to inform the general public that the authority of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon have informed the agency that the dam management will begin regulated water releases at a rate of 100m³/s (8,640,000m³/day) today, 17th September 2024,” it said.

“The water release is expected to increase gradually to 1000m³/s in the next seven days depending on the inflow from the upstream Garoua River.”

Cameroon contemplates slow water release

Water releases will be gradual, the statement said.

Once reservoir flow decreases, Lagdo Dam overflow should stop.

NIHSA told the public there was no imminent threat despite the notice.

The NIHSA advised the states bordering the Benue River system—Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers—to increase surveillance and prepare. This is to reduce floods from increasing main river flow during this season.

Lagdo Dam is on the Benue River in northern Cameroon, in the Niger basin. The dam creates a 586-square-kilometer lake.
