The actor wants more after portraying the legendary Star Wars character created by Alec Guinness in three films and a Disney+ series.
In 2019, Ewan McGregor said that he will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Disney+ series set on Tatooine before A New Hope. After its 2022 debut, the program was well-received but not as popular as Andor or The Mandalorian. It’s strange that Obi-Wan Kenobi hasn’t been renewed considering the character’s popularity, McGregor’s clear joy in portraying him, and the show’s questions.
In an interview with Variety when they added his star to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, McGregor said he still talks about Obi-Wan Kenobi. “I loved, more than anything, getting to know Alec Guinness’ work because I was playing him as a young man,” McGregor told the trade. “Even with the series, that’s my personal challenge—if a take feels like him, I’m happy.”
McGregor started portraying Obi-Wan in 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but he seems set to continue. (He’s 53, little about a decade younger than Guinness in A New Hope.) “I really do hope we get a chance to do another one,” he told Variety. Between where we left off in the series and when Alec Guinness plays Luke Skywalker, I believe there are more things to tell.”
Hayden Christenen, who played Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader from 2002’s Attack of the Clones to 2023’s Ahsoka, wants to work with McGregor again. If that means I get to do more with Ewan, that’s a no-brainer, but I hope he keeps playing him. As a fan, seeing him portray Obi-Wan is thrilling—he’s so good.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi’s second season may seem implausible, but Lucasfilm and Disney+ released no definitive declaration about its future, like they did with Acolyte. It’s still possible, particularly considering McGregor is so excited about it. Would you want Obi-Wan Kenobi back?
