AMC’s $20-30 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Cocktail Needs Spirit

The cinema chain’s “Sandworm Slayer”—a blue cocktail with six off-the-shelf sour gummy worms—seems overpriced.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, an AMC Theatres promotional Beetlejuice cocktail with a MacGuffin’s bar might cost $31, depending on your state’s liquor tax rules.

The 24-ounce “Sandworm Slayer” drink calls for “a mix of blue and black raspberry” juice on the rocks and “matched with [an undisclosed] premium vodka.” For theatrical use, the drink is topped with six sour gummy worms (presumably Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers) and delivered in a plastic cup. According to the source, the blue drink costs $21, which is still horrifying. The unhappy consumer bought his Sandworm Slayer in Illinois, which “bumped the drink’s price to $28.25, plus tax.”

The drink, even if it tasted great (which seems unlikely), is visually disappointing and fails to resemble Tim Burton’s picture in concept or presentation for its price. Why is it blue? Sandworms are black-and-white striped annelids with red eyespots and two sets of green lips, like Beetlejuice. This drink may be presented in numerous ways to make it seem worth $20-30.

A layered drink with black syrup and white liqueur for the creature’s body and two maraschino cherries for the eyespots. Rim a tall glass with green sugar, and your drink looks like a sandworm. If that’s too hard, a black-and-white striped straw with your beverage would really help. Making the fluid green instead of blue makes it more Beetlejuice-like than AMC’s confused Sandworm Slayer. With another bomb shot, you may see the worm’s actual head. What about a cocktail that evokes Lydia’s scarlet wedding dress or the first film’s weird “Day-O” musical number?

Instead of capitalism, AMC’s ridiculously pricey tie-in drink disappoints due to its lack of inventiveness. The corporation just experienced death, so you’d think it’d be more thoughtful about death. Perhaps booze.
