DC’s massive new Batman has a new, big Bat-axe and may be laxing his “no killing” rule.
DC is going big with its new “Absolute” comics, a blockbuster take on Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman from an alternate universe where they became heroes without the support structures that helped them become the legendary trinity. Bruce Wayne is six feet six and 250 pounds, so going large is literal for Batman. You’d think that would be enough to terrify Gotham’s baddies, but this huge kid needs an extremely large axe too.
Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, who returned to DC to help shepherd the Absolute line and its creative teams, teased this new Batman’s weaponry, but AIPT’s preview of Absolute Batman #1 showed it in action for the first time. In the trailer, Bruce descends on a bunch of masked criminals, pulls out a haft, locks it into the base of his suit’s similarly-absolute-unit-sized bat symbol, and removes it to show a massive axe head.
It may be the pinnacle of superhero comics: goofy and cool. The thicc bat logo had been criticized online for trading girth for Bat recognition, pushing too far on a Batman style that was, despite the wearer’s size and height, still rather conventional. It’s a fun touch to make it Bruce’s huge weapon attachment for fighting. In The Batman, Robert Pattison’s Batsuit included a bat-shaped symbol with a knife. This heightened Batman has a delightful, heightened twist.
Its sheer violence makes it intriguing. In comics and other versions of Batman, his connection with the concept that he doesn’t kill lives has been a contentious subject. Even those that keep true to that belief show him beating and breaking individuals within an inch of their life. However, in the Absolute Batman #1 teaser, Bruce nonchalantly unsheaths his blade and cuts off a goon’s forearm, which is quite cool for a Batman rendition. Still a Bat-kill if he bleeds out!
I want to emphasize horror and use Scott’s skills. Bring back the terrifying Batman. Dragotta informed AIPT that Absolute Batman’s threatening, deadly crimefighting would be shown in scenes. “He’s a more brutal Batman who’ll use it as a tool. Everything is a tool for him to utilize to achieve his job.”
He must divide people with his insignia, obviously. Absolute Batman possesses a chest-wide axe, while Absolute Wonder Woman has a massive sword. Will Absolute Superman receive a themed weapon to complete the trifecta? A spear may be entertaining. Avoid tipping it with Kryptonite.
