iPhone 16 shipments in 2024

Analyst suggests that despite claims, iPhone 16 shipments in 2024 are not expected to see an increase.

According to the analyst, Apple is projecting a shipment of 87 million iPhone 16 units in the second half of 2024, which is slightly lower than the 91 million iPhone 15 shipments in the same period of 2023.

An Apple analyst has cast doubt on the expected increase in iPhone 16 shipments for 2024, suggesting that the launch may not go as anticipated. There has been speculation that the increase in iPhone orders from suppliers is due to the upcoming upgrades in Apple’s next iPhone. One of the highlights of this new iPhone is Apple Intelligence, a suite of artificial intelligence (AI) features. Nevertheless, the latest earnings calls of Apple suppliers suggest that the company anticipates comparable shipments of its iPhone 16 in comparison to the iPhone 15 series.

Shipment details for the iPhone 16

There have been recent rumors circulating about Apple potentially increasing iPhone 16 shipments in 2024. According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple is aiming to ship a minimum of 90 million iPhone 16 units in the second half of 2024, which would result in a 10 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth. This can be attributed to the iPhone maker’s optimistic outlook on sales of the entire iPhone 16 lineup, thanks to the new A18 chipset and Apple Intelligence features.

However, it’s possible that things may not go as expected. According to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the earnings calls of two Apple suppliers, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Largan, indicate that Apple is not anticipating a significant increase in shipments of its next iPhone series from an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) or assembly standpoint.

Analysts expect 87 million units of the iPhone 16 to ship in the second half of 2024, which is slightly lower than the 91 million units of the iPhone 15 that shipped in the second half of 2023.

According to the analyst, the individuals at TSMC stated that they did not observe a sudden increase in unit growth. In addition, Largan commented that the orders for high-end models this year are on par with those of last year.

Apple Intelligence supports only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which feature the advanced A17 Pro SoC. However, the standard iPhone 15 and earlier models do not support this feature. Given the speculation that all models in the iPhone 16 lineup will run on the same chipset, it is possible that the entire series will support Apple’s AI suite.
