Obi Calls for Transparency in Port Harcourt Refinery Operations
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to maintain transparency in managing the newly launched Port Harcourt Refinery. After several delays, the refinery began production on Tuesday with a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, supplying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), diesel, and other products to the Nigerian market. It expects to load 200 trucks daily.
Obi commended the NNPCL for fulfilling its promise to revamp the facility, highlighting its potential economic benefits. “I congratulate the NNPC for fulfilling the long-standing promise of revamping the old Port Harcourt refinery. Nigerians now await the corresponding impact on pump prices and the overall economy,” he said.
He also welcomed the revival of the Kaduna refinery, noting its potential to boost productivity and ease economic burdens. However, he stressed that Nigerians must experience tangible benefits from these projects.
“News of the Kaduna refinery’s revival is promising, but we must emphasize the importance of transparency in the operations of the NNPC,” Obi added.
He concluded by urging the government to ensure accountability in managing oil resources so the increased refining capacity directly benefits citizens and supports national development. “Nigerians deserve clarity and accountability to ensure the gains reach every Nigerian and support long-term development,” Obi stated.
