Inter Miami has appointed former Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano as their new head coach, following the departure of Gerardo Martino due to personal reasons. Mascherano, 40, brings with him a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach. He previously coached the Argentine Under-20 and Olympic teams, including guiding them in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Mascherano’s playing career saw him represent top clubs like River Plate, Corinthians, West Ham United, Liverpool, and most notably Barcelona, where he made 203 appearances. At Barcelona, he played alongside Lionel Messi, who is now his player at Inter Miami, as well as other key team members such as Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suárez.
Inter Miami’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, praised Mascherano’s vast experience, believing his blend of knowledge from playing at the highest level and coaching youth teams will help maximize the club’s talent. This appointment comes after a highly successful season for Miami, where they won the Supporters’ Shield but fell short in the playoffs.
Co-owner David Beckham expressed confidence in Mascherano’s abilities, citing his determination and footballing instincts. Mascherano, for his part, expressed excitement about the opportunity, describing it as an honor and privilege. He looks forward to leading the club and helping them achieve greater success, building on their ambition and world-class infrastructure.
Mascherano’s deep understanding of the game and international experience make him a strong addition as Inter Miami aims to continue setting a new standard for football in North America.
