The former chair of the UNIZIK governing council criticises the dismissal, claiming it was an injustice

President Bola Tinubu should investigate the Ministry of Education’s dismissal of Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Prof. Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe-led Governing Council.

In Owerri, Imo State capital, Mbadiwe addressed reporters on Tuesday on behalf of the council.

Thank you for sharing. “If there’s anything you’d like assistance with regarding this role, please don’t hesitate to ask. Additionally, feel free to reach out for any further support or clarification. Allowing justice to proceed is intentional and necessary to ensure fairness and accountability.”

“Recent events, especially the Ministry of Education’s sudden dissolution of the University Council and the declaration of illegality regarding the properly constituted Committees for selecting the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar, which followed the Nnamdi Azikiwe (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2012 (as amended), compel me to speak out.”

Moreover, all relevant stakeholders, including Council and Senate representatives, actively participated and had full representation in the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar appointment process. One external council member was chairman, and four internal members made up the search committee.

Furthermore, the vice-chancellor and registrar selection committees were legal and followed procedures, he said.

He added, “The Vice-Chancellor and Registrar Selection Committees were duly and lawfully constituted in accordance with established regulations. It’s also important to note that the ‘aggrieved parties’ have filed various court cases that are currently pending.”

The court, as the final arbitrator of justice, law, equality, and fairness, will decide. Administrative resolution without regard to judicial processes or court rulings is unjust and a grievous miscarriage of justice.

“Does this mean that Nigeria’s beloved court, the ultimate institution for adjudicating justice, no longer rules? I respectfully disagree and object.”

Over the years, I have undertaken many other national assignments, too many to name here.

However, recently, these efforts were overlooked when the Ministry of Education issued a statement broadcast in the media, announcing the dissolution of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka Council, where I served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman.

Mbadiwe now calls on the President to investigate the Ministry of Education’s sack and verify the letter’s signatories.

“It’s a violation of one’s rights that the Ministry of Education acted without inviting the council to ask any questions or seek inputs in any aspect of the subject matter in question in a critical matter,” he added.

He further urged the President to review the matter to protect his career and the council’s reputation.

Earlier, President Tinubu dissolved the ruling council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka.

As per Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu also approved the dismissal of the new vice-chancellor Bernard Odoh and the registrar Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike.

The dissolved council included Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Amioleran Osahon, and Funsho Oyeneyin. The council and its officials were dismissed after reports surfaced that they had nominated an unqualified vice-chancellor without following the proper process.
