Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former governorship aspirant in Ogun State, has announced the formation of a national opposition coalition network aimed at rescuing Nigeria and its democracy from looming threats.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Showunmi explained that the coalition was established because the Bola Tinubu government lacks viable opposition, as both the PDP and other opposition parties have lost momentum
He highlighted the declining enthusiasm of the electorate and the erosion of clear ideological differences between political parties, which have shifted focus to individual personalities rather than values and ideology.
Despite improvements in the guidelines and operations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he observed a progressive lack of transparency and integrity in the electoral process.
Instead, it will serve as a platform for advocacy, educating the public about the importance of democracy, electoral outcomes, and the dangers of vote trading. The movement aims to reorient citizens and confront the growing issue of vote-buying, which undermines the electoral process.
Showunmi emphasized the coalition’s goal of engaging political actors, civil society, the media, and democratic institutions to ensure the sustainability of democracy. The coalition plans to hold town hall meetings at the zonal, state, local government, and ward levels to engage the public and build partnerships that will drive the movement’s objectives forward.
