Defence ministers from Germany, France, Poland, Italy, and the UK will convene in Berlin on Monday to discuss strategies for bolstering European security and defence. The meeting comes amid escalating tensions stemming from Russia’s deployment of a new medium-range missile, which poses significant implications for Europe.
Germany’s Boris Pistorius, France’s Sébastien Lecornu, the UK’s John Healey, Poland’s Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, and Italy’s Guido Crosetto plan to address these developments and prepare for potential changes in NATO leadership under Donald Trump.
The former U.S. president, who assumes office on January 20, has demanded greater European investment in defence and is expected to reduce military aid to Ukraine.
Recent events in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will feature prominently in discussions. Ukraine, with Washington’s approval, has started deploying U.S.-made ATACMS missiles and British Storm Shadow cruise missiles to target Russian military sites. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, home to over a million residents, using the newly unveiled “Oreshnik” missile.
Putin described the ‘Oreshnik’ as a hypersonic weapon reportedly impervious to current anti-aircraft systems.
As NATO allies deliberate on countermeasures, the evolving situation underscores the urgency of coordinated European defence strategies.
