Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has faced significant backlash following his remarks on leadership and governance in Nigeria, made at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University. In his speech, Obasanjo criticized subsequent Nigerian administrations, labeling the country as a “failing nation” and accusing them of failing to address the nation’s problems.
In response, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, issued a statement that strongly condemned Obasanjo’s remarks, calling them hypocritical and undeserving of emulation. Onanuga took issue with what he described as Obasanjo’s “legacy of constitutional violations, corruption, and poor leadership” during his tenure in office.
The statement accused Obasanjo of brazen illegality, citing the unconstitutional impeachment of four state governors and allegations of corruption, including his involvement in the Halliburton bribery scandal.
Key criticisms also included Obasanjo’s failure to address national infrastructure issues, particularly the neglect of federal roads and the power crisis. Despite spending $16 billion on electricity projects, Obasanuga pointed out that the power sector remained in crisis.
Additionally, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and other national road projects were left uncompleted, contributing to the country’s poor infrastructure record during Obasanjo’s leadership.
