President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to the Nigerian Tribune on its 75th anniversary, lauding the publication’s longstanding commitment to social justice, democracy, and press freedom.
In a statement titled “President Tinubu Commends Nigerian Tribune on 75 Years of Progressive Journalism” and released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President acknowledged the paper’s significant role in Nigerian journalism. Founded on November 16, 1949, by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his wife, Hannah, the Nigerian Tribune has played a vital part in shaping the nation’s media landscape.
President Tinubu highlighted the paper’s dedication to maintaining democracy, social justice, and press freedom.
Tinubu paid homage to veteran journalists who upheld the Tribune’s mission, acknowledging figures like former Lagos State Governor Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Ayo Ojewunmi (“Pen Atalanta”), Chief Tola Adeniyi, Biodun Oduwole, and Folu Olamiti.
These pioneers, he noted, played crucial roles in sustaining the newspaper’s influence, even amid efforts to suppress its voice.
Recognizing the publication’s unwavering commitment to truth, Tinubu affirmed its role as a vigilant societal watchdog over the decades.
He emphasized the importance of credible, fact-based journalism, especially in an era where digital platforms have enabled anyone to become a “citizen journalist.”
The President expressed hope that the 75th-anniversary celebrations would not only honor the Tribune’s legacy but also inspire future generations to uphold the values of truth and responsible reporting.
He wished the publication continued success in championing democratic ideals and contributing to Nigeria’s progress.
