Mia Le Roux, recently crowned Miss South Africa 2024, has officially withdrawn from the Miss Universe competition due to health concerns.
In a heartfelt statement released by the Miss South Africa Organisation on Friday, Le Roux expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support from South Africans. She acknowledged that stepping back was a difficult decision but emphasized the need to prioritize her well-being.
“I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from South Africa during my time at Miss Universe. This decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the hopes and dreams entrusted to me,” she stated. “However, I am grateful to focus on my health and recovery so I can continue serving my country to the best of my ability.”
The Miss South Africa Organisation also voiced its support for Le Roux, praising her resilience during a tough period.
“Mia has shown incredible courage and grace throughout this journey,” the organization noted. “Her health and well-being remain our top priority, and we are committed to supporting her recovery.”
Le Roux’s withdrawal follows a tumultuous year for the Miss South Africa pageant. Earlier, Chidimma Adetshina, a contestant of Nigerian and South African heritage, withdrew from the competition amid social media backlash regarding her nationality.
The 23-year-old, born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent, faced scrutiny after the South African Home Affairs Ministry began investigating allegations of identity theft involving her mother.
In a twist, Adetshina went on to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, where she emerged victorious. Meanwhile, Mia Le Roux, of Dutch Boer descent, was subsequently crowned Miss South Africa 2024.
The Miss South Africa Organisation continues to face challenges as it navigates these controversies, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity while respecting the pageant’s legacy.
