Apple Inc. has announced its acquisition of Pixelmator, a Lithuanian software company known for its advanced photo-editing apps on Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Founded by brothers Saulius and Aidas Dailide, Pixelmator has been recognized for its powerful editing tools that rival Adobe’s Photoshop and Illustrator, including layers, vectors, and Apple-exclusive features such as iCloud integration, Shortcuts, and Pencil support on iPad.
The acquisition strengthens Apple’s software ecosystem, marking a return to high-end photo editing since the company retired its Aperture software nearly a decade ago. This move adds Pixelmator Pro—a robust $50 editing tool on Mac and a $10 standard version for iPad and iPhone—to Apple’s lineup, complementing its recent push to bring pro-level apps like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad on a subscription basis.
Pixelmator announced that it will not make any immediate changes to its products, but it expects to release future updates. This acquisition aligns with Apple’s few strategic purchases in recent years, following its DarwinAI buyout earlier in 2024, and its largest acquisition of Beats in 2014.
