The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has suspended the strike that began on October 25.
Workers resumed their duties on Friday morning, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The seven-day nationwide warning strike aimed to press for the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure, similar to the adjustments made to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure since January 2, 2014.
Additional demands included the implementation of a consultant cadre for pharmacists in federal health institutions, an increase in the retirement age for health workers from 60 to 65 years, 70 years for consultants, and the payment of outstanding salaries for JOHESU members in professional regulatory councils.
Mr. Oladayo Olabampe, the UCH JOHESU Chairman, informed NAN that the strike was suspended following directions from the national leadership.
He explained, “The suspension followed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between JOHESU’s national leadership and the Federal Government. The government requested a maximum of six weeks from October 31 to address our demands.”
“Based on the MoU signed, the JOHESU National Executive Council convened and resolved to suspend the strike nationwide on Friday.”
Olabampe confirmed that JOHESU UCH is complying with the order and that workers have returned to work. He cautioned that if the demands are not met after the six-week period, they will initiate an indefinite strike.
