Russia’s defense ministry announced Tuesday that its forces have captured the eastern Ukrainian town of Selydove as part of ongoing advances toward the strategic logistics hub of Pokrovsk.
Selydove, located approximately 18 kilometers (10 miles) southeast of Pokrovsk, represents the latest territorial gain for Russia in the Donetsk region, where it has made significant advances in recent months.
The ministry stated, “As a result of successful operations… the town of Selidovo in the Donetsk region is fully liberated,” using the Russian spelling for Selydove.
This announcement follows Russia’s recent capture of nearby villages Bogoyavlenka and Katerynivka, as well as the small town of Girnyk, situated south of Selydove and close to the Ukrainian-controlled industrial town of Kurakhove.
Selydove, once home to around 20,000 residents, housed the Donetsk region’s only coal mine under Ukrainian control, which continued operation despite its proximity to the frontline, making it a vital resource for Ukraine.
According to data from the American Institute for the Study of War, analyzed by AFP, the Russian military captured 478 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in October, marking the largest territorial gain since the early stages of the conflict in March 2022.
