Femi Kuti, the celebrated Afrobeat musician and son of the legendary Fela Kuti, shared his thoughts on the “japa” trend, where many Nigerians are emigrating for better opportunities abroad.
Kuti questioned the belief that Europe and America are ideal destinations, pointing out that these regions achieved their stability through internal struggles, including civil wars, not by running away. He noted that Europe endured numerous civil wars, and America had its own brutal conflict, shaping their societies over time.
In his speech, Kuti urged Nigerians to take responsibility for the country’s future, reminding them that true change would come from within, through dedication and hard work.
He referenced the Fela Shrine in Lagos, a cultural landmark his family built as a testament to their commitment to Africa.
He concluded by stressing the importance of ensuring that the legacy they’ve built endures, expressing his desire to retire knowing Nigeria is in capable hands.
