England has appointed Thomas Tuchel as the new permanent manager of the men’s national team, following successful discussions with the English FA.
Tuchel, who previously managed Chelsea and Bayern Munich, agreed to an 18-month contract that begins in January 2025 and will run through the 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel becomes the first German and the third foreign manager to take charge of England, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. His success in European football, notably leading Chelsea to a Champions League title, played a significant role in the FA’s decision to secure his services.
Despite interest from Manchester United and AC Milan, England moved quickly to finalize the deal. Tuchel’s prior relationship with England captain Harry Kane, whom he signed for Bayern Munich, as well as his familiarity with several England internationals from his Chelsea tenure, were considered key assets in his appointment.
This announcement brings an end to the speculation surrounding Gareth Southgate’s successor and provides England with an elite-level coach ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
