France head coach Didier Deschamps has clarified the reason behind Kylian Mbappé’s absence from the 2024 Nations League squad, following widespread surprise and speculation about the decision.
In a recent interview, Deschamps insisted that the decision to leave Mbappé out of the squad was entirely his own.
He emphasised that Real Madrid did not influence the choice and was based on a thorough assessment of the player’s fitness and recovery needs.
Deschamps addressed the criticism Mbappé faced for skipping the international games, stating that they made the decision with the player’s long-term well-being in mind, given the demands of the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.
He had said: “Mbappe was not fit against Villarreal. There was no request. The decision is mine. He played the Villarreal game without being 100 per cent fit.”
Kylian Mbappe has continued to struggle with match fitness following the knock he picked up before his last two fixtures for Real Madrid before the international break.
